"Help one another. This is what Jesus told us. This is what I do. And I do it with my heart." - Pope Francis

Brings a message and changes the Church. He describes himself just as 'a normal people'.

Born in Argentina, Pope Francis is the first Latin American- and the first Jesuit - to lead the Roman Catholic Church.

Born to Italian immigrants parents on December 17, 1936 Jorge Mario Bergoglio grew up in a middle class section of Buenos Aires. He did some pretty, normal things as a teenager, like dancing the Tango. Before he got interest in priesthood, he studied to become a chemical technician. He was ordained as a Jesuit in 1969 and went on to study in Argentina and Germany. As a young man, he had a lung removed because of a serious infection, but his health is currently said to be good. In 1992 he became a bishop and in 1998 the Archbishop of Canterbury. At the 2005 conclave, he was seen as a contender for the papacy. However, Analysts didn't see Jorge Mario Bergoglio as a favorite for the job of succeeding Benedict XVI, and his advanced age, at 76. His election took many by surprise in his home city, where many had thought his age ruled him out. He is the first Jesuit, the first to take the name Francis, as well as the first non-European leader of the church in more than 1,200 years. He appeals to both Church conservatives and reformers, being seen as orthodox on sexual matters, for instance, but liberal on social justice.

    Life in Pope Francis's world

Throughout his public life, Pope Francis has been noted for his humility, emphasis on God's mercy, helping and supporting poor and sick people.

Things you might not know about Pope Francis

He describes himself as a 'normal person', and also acts like that. He sleeps in his own two bedroom apartment, instead in the papal palace and he is using Ford Focus, instead of riding a limo. With his words, he has brought/brings hope and change. From the first day he was elected he tried to bring a new message, change the Church and bring it into the 21st Century. Before the election, he said the Church, in order to survive, must stop "living within herself, of herself, for herself." We can see, what positive changes this pope, who seems to be more in touch with the real world, can create. Pope Francis is pushing for a world that has more income equality, better human rights, social and environmental justice for all and for a world where forgiveness and peace are a reality. Although, he doesn't describe himself as a hero, for me, this man is a Hero.
