Nelson Mandela was the South African president from 1994-1999, during this time he tackled poverty, racism and inequality. His accomplishments have made him a hero.
Nelson Mandela was the South African president from 1994-1999 he was elected in the first fully represented and multi racial election. He addressed racism, poverty and inequality. His original name was Rolihlahla, when attending primary school he was given a christian name, Nelson. Mandela secretly left South Africa and traveled around and got military training. When returning he was arrested and served a five year sentence, for leaving the country without a permit and for encouraging workers to strike. Later in his life he was sentenced to life in prison for standing up against the government. He was released after 27 years. After prison he ran for president and won, he also won a Nobel Peace Prize.
