He comes from a Thembu royal family of the Xhosa ethnic group that exists on part of the Transkei. Indeed, his great-grandfather's father Inkosi Enkhulu, that is to say king of Thembu people. Nelson Mandela joined the African National Congress (ANC) in 1943 to fight against the political domination of the white minority and racial segregation conducted by it.
