he fought against the apparteid
He was president of South Africa and fought against the apparteid.
Nelson Mandela was the emblematic figure, somehow the hero of the struggle against apartheid in South Africa by fighting for an egalitarian and democratic South African society. Born in 1918, a lawyer by training, he will be a member of the African National Congress (English, ANC) in 1943 and quickly became one of the leaders. It is hardening the position of the ANC against apartheid (civil disobedience campaign in 1952, creating a military wing, Umkhonto we Sizwe, in 1961) that he will be sentenced to life in prison 1964. He spent 27 years in his life. He was released in 1990 after spending 18 years on Robben Island, Pollsmoor 6 years, and then under house arrest. But the ANC managed to kneel apartheid with the support of the South African population (70-80% black population) and the growing support of the international community. In 1993 he was awarded (jointly with Frederik de Klerk, the white president of South Africa at the time) the Nobel Peace Prize. Nelson Mandela is elected the first black president of South Africa in the first multiracial elections of the country in 1994
