Lionel Tertis was known to be the best viola player who ever lived. He inspired many people to play the viola. He also made many improvements to the viola.

Originally played violin at the Royal Academy of Music, there he was encouraged to play the viola. Later he got a 1717 Montagnana and was 17 inches long. He liked to use big instruments to get a richer tone. Later he created a Tertis model model of the instrument have the advantages and made it a 16 ¾ inch model. He was known as one of the best musicians of his time.
