Through the actions of Æthelflæd, Mercia remained strong. When the kingdom was finally absorbed after her death, Mercia did not become part of a greater Wessex but of an emerging England - the term Anglo-Saxon reflects both the Mercian Angles and the Wessex Saxons.

She carried on her father's work, leading the Anglo-Saxons towards a united England.
