Anne Askew was born in 1521 at South Kelsey, Lincolnshire. She was the daughter of Sir William Askew of Stallingborough, a member of the gentry. He was a rich landowner and a knight at the court of King Henry VIII. Anne's mother, Elizabeth Askew (nee Wrottesley), died when Anne was very young. A little while later Anne’s father married Elizabeth Hutton, and Anne and her brothers and sisters, were raised by their father and stepmother.
